Objectives

At the conclusion of this training, clinicians should be able to:

  • Describe, citing published evaluations, at least three ways general-purpose chatbots respond well and three ways they respond poorly in common clinical moments (crisis, reassurance-seeking, distorted thinking, grief, relationship conflict).

  • Explain how social and emotional development across the lifespan (co-regulation, attachment, peer belonging, socioemotional selectivity in later life) depends on human interaction, and identify one developmental task at each life stage that an AI response can support or displace.

  • Apply a four-question appraisal (Accurate? Fits this client? What function did it serve? Any risk?) to an AI response a client brings to session.

  • Demonstrate two techniques for working with AI output in session without endorsing it or dismissing it.

  • Distinguish supplementation from substitution in a case vignette and name one intervention for each.

  • Identify the counselor’s obligations when an AI exchange contains risk content, and write one line of appropriate documentation.
